Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to cooking tasks, such as measuring ingredients and adjusting recipe quantities.
Materials and Prep
- Measuring cups and spoons
- A recipe of your choice
- A calculator (optional)
Prior knowledge: Basic understanding of fractions and decimals.
Activities
-
Choose a recipe that you would like to cook. It can be a simple dish or a dessert.
Read through the recipe and identify the measurements of ingredients needed. Write them down.
-
Convert the measurements from fractions to decimals. For example, if a recipe calls for 1/2 cup of flour, convert it to 0.5 cups.
Use the measuring cups and spoons to measure out the ingredients according to the converted measurements. You can use a calculator if needed.
-
Once you have prepared the dish, taste it and evaluate if any adjustments are needed. For example, if the dish is too sweet, you can calculate how much sugar to reduce based on the total quantity.
Practice adjusting the recipe by using arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Make notes of the adjustments made.
