Materials and Prep
- Colorful picture books
- Paper and crayons
- Enthusiasm and a playful attitude!
Activities
- Storytime with Similes: Read a colorful picture book with lots of animal characters. Point out sentences like "The bear is as big as a house" and explain that it's a simile comparing the bear's size to a house.
- Draw Your Metaphor: Ask the student to draw a picture of their favorite animal and then describe it using a metaphor like "My cat is a fluffy cloud in the sky."
- Act Out Similes: Encourage the student to act out simple similes like "Jump as high as a frog" or "Run as fast as a cheetah."
Talking Points
- What is a simile?
"A simile is when we compare two things using the words 'like' or 'as'. It helps us imagine things better!" - Can you give me an example of a simile?
"The sun is like a big yellow ball in the sky. It's not really a ball, but it helps us understand how bright and round it is!" - What is a metaphor?
"A metaphor is when we say something is something else to show how they are similar in some way. It's like pretending!" - Can you make a metaphor about your toy?
"My teddy bear is a brave knight protecting me from monsters. It's not really a knight, but it makes me feel safe and strong!"
