Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to solve problems related to rabbits.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Blank paper

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity: Bunny Hopping

Ask the student to imagine a group of rabbits hopping around in a field. Have them draw a picture of the rabbits hopping in different directions.

Then, ask the student to count the number of rabbits they drew. Write down this number.

Next, ask the student to multiply the number of rabbits by 4. Have them write down the result.

Finally, ask the student to subtract 2 from the result. Discuss the final number and its relation to the initial number of rabbits drawn.

  2. Activity: Feeding Time

Tell the student that each rabbit needs to eat 3 carrots every day. Ask them to calculate how many carrots would be needed if there were 6 rabbits in total.

Once they have their answer, ask the student to multiply the number of rabbits by 5 to find out how many carrots would be needed for 5 days.

Discuss the total number of carrots and how it changes based on the number of rabbits and the number of days.

Fifth Grade Talking Points

  • "Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations."
  • "In our first activity, we used multiplication and subtraction to explore the relationship between the number of rabbits and the final result."
  • "In the second activity, we used multiplication to calculate the total number of carrots needed based on the number of rabbits and the number of days."
  • "Arithmetic helps us solve real-life problems, like figuring out quantities or making calculations."
  • "By practicing arithmetic, we become better at using numbers and solving mathematical problems."
