Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify basic shapes, count up to 5, and understand simple concepts of motion and direction through playing with a train set.
Materials and Prep
- Toy train set with tracks
- Toy trains and cars
- Paper and crayons for drawing tracks
- Clean play area with enough space for the train set
No prior knowledge or preparation required.
Activities
- Draw tracks: Let the student draw different shapes on paper and then connect them to create tracks for the train set.
- Identify shapes: Ask the student to point out shapes like circles, squares, and triangles on the train set pieces.
- Counting cars: Have the student count the number of toy cars on the train set as they move them around.
Talking Points
- Shapes: "This train track is shaped like a circle. Can you find other shapes like squares and triangles?"
- Counting: "Let's count how many train cars are on the track. One, two, three, four, five!"
- Motion and direction: "When we push the train forward, it goes that way. When we pull it back, it comes back. Let's try it!"
