Objective
By the end of this lesson, Giovonnie will be able to understand the life cycle of a butterfly and a plant.
Materials and Prep
- Coloring pencils/markers
- Blank paper
- Access to a garden or park
- Access to online resources about butterfly and plant life cycles
No prior knowledge needed, just curiosity and enthusiasm!
Activities
- Butterfly Life Cycle Drawing: Have Giovonnie draw and color the stages of a butterfly's life cycle (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, butterfly).
- Plant Life Cycle Observation: Take a walk in the garden or park to observe different plants. Have Giovonnie pick one plant and observe its different parts (roots, stem, leaves, flowers). Discuss the plant life cycle.
- Online Research: Use online resources to learn more about the life cycles of butterflies and plants. Encourage Giovonnie to share one interesting fact about each life cycle.
Talking Points
- “Just like how we grow from babies to adults, butterflies also go through different stages in their life cycle. They start as eggs, then become caterpillars, go into a chrysalis, and finally emerge as beautiful butterflies!”
- “Plants also have a life cycle. They start as seeds, then grow into seedlings with roots, stems, and leaves, and eventually produce flowers and fruits to make new seeds.”
- “Did you know that butterflies taste with their feet? They use their feet to sense whether the plants they land on are good for laying eggs.”
- “Plants need sunlight, water, and air to grow. Just like how we need food and water to stay healthy, plants need these things to survive and go through their life cycle.”
