Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and work with fractions confidently.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed: paper, pencil, colored markers.
Prior knowledge required: basic understanding of addition and subtraction.
Activities
Create a Fraction Pizza: Draw a circle and divide it into slices. Color in a fraction of the slices to represent different fractions like 1/2, 1/4, etc.
Fraction Bingo: Create Bingo cards with fractions written on them. Call out fractions and have the student mark them on their card.
Equivalent Fractions Match: Write down different fractions on cards and have the student match equivalent fractions together.
Talking Points
"Fractions represent parts of a whole. For example, 1/2 means one out of two equal parts of a whole."
"When adding fractions, the denominator (bottom number) must be the same. Add the numerators (top numbers) together."
"To subtract fractions, make sure the denominators are the same. Then subtract the numerators."
"Equivalent fractions are different fractions that represent the same value. For example, 1/2 is equivalent to 2/4."
