Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Colorful markers or crayons
- Ruler
No prior knowledge needed, just bring your enthusiasm and creativity!
Activities
- Create a Fraction Pizza: Draw a circle on a piece of paper and divide it into slices. Color in different slices to represent different fractions.
- Fraction Art Collage: Cut out different shapes from colored paper and create a collage where each shape represents a fraction of the whole artwork.
- Fraction Flags: Design flags using different colors and divide them into sections to represent fractions. You can even create your own country with a flag that represents your favorite fraction.
Talking Points
- What is a fraction? - "A fraction is a way to represent a part of a whole. It shows how many parts of a whole we have."
- Numerator and Denominator - "The top number of a fraction is called the numerator, and the bottom number is called the denominator. The numerator tells us how many parts we have, and the denominator tells us how many parts make a whole."
- Equivalent Fractions - "Equivalent fractions are different fractions that represent the same amount. They may look different, but they are equal in value."
- Adding and Subtracting Fractions - "When we add or subtract fractions, we need to make sure they have the same denominator. Just like adding or subtracting pieces of a pizza, we need to have the same size slices."
- Practical Examples - "Fractions are everywhere! From sharing a pizza with friends to measuring ingredients for a recipe, fractions help us understand and work with parts of a whole in our everyday lives."
