Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand how transportation and communication have changed over time and recognize ways in which individuals change or stay the same.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Coloring supplies
  • Imagination!

No prior knowledge needed, just come ready to learn and have fun!

Activities

  • Draw and Compare: Draw a picture of how people used to travel and communicate long ago, then draw a picture of how we do it now. Compare the two drawings and talk about the differences.
  • Role Play: Pretend to be someone from the past and act out how they traveled and communicated. Then switch to being someone from today and show how things are different now.
  • Make a Time Capsule: Create a time capsule by filling a box with items that represent transportation and communication from today. Bury it in the backyard and pretend to dig it up in the future to see how things have changed!

Talking Points

  • "Long ago, people used horses and carriages to travel, but now we have cars and airplanes that are much faster!"
  • "In the past, people sent letters by mail, but now we can send messages instantly through phones and computers!"
  • "Even though transportation and communication have changed a lot, people still like to explore new places and talk to their friends, just like they did before!"
