Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and work with place value concepts using Fortnite-themed examples.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Basic understanding of place value (ones, tens, hundreds)
Activities
- Fortnite Loot: Create a list of Fortnite items with different values (e.g., 100 V-Bucks, 500 Wood, 50 Ammo). Ask the student to write the value of each item using place value.
- Build Your Fort: Give the student a number (e.g., 367) and ask them to build a fort with that many resources. They can draw the fort and label the number of resources in each place value slot.
- Number Battle: Have a friendly competition where you call out numbers, and the student needs to quickly identify the place value of a specific digit (e.g., What is the value of the digit 6 in 467?).
Talking Points
- Understanding Ones, Tens, and Hundreds: "In place value, each digit has a specific value based on its position. The rightmost digit is the ones place, the next digit to the left is the tens place, and the one after that is the hundreds place."
- Reading Numbers: "When we read a number like 365, we say it as 'three hundred sixty-five.' Each digit holds a different value depending on its position in the number."
- Building Numbers: "Just like building forts in Fortnite requires different resources, building numbers requires understanding the value of each digit in its place."
- Practice Makes Perfect: "The more we practice working with place value, the easier it becomes to understand and work with numbers. Keep practicing and you'll become a master at it!"
