Materials and Prep
- Whiteboard or paper
- Markers or crayons
- No prior knowledge needed
Activities
- Vowel Hunt: Walk around your house and find objects that start with different vowels. Draw the objects on the whiteboard or paper.
- Vowel Coloring: Write down vowels (a, e, i, o, u) on the whiteboard and color each one with a different color. Say the vowel sounds as you color.
- Vowel Song: Sing a fun song that emphasizes vowel sounds. You can make up your own tune or use a familiar one like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" with vowel sounds.
Talking Points
- Vowels are special letters that make words sound different. "Vowels are like magic letters that help words sound just right!"
- We have five special vowels: "There are five special letters - a, e, i, o, u. Let's say them together!"
- Each vowel has its own sound: "A says 'ah', E says 'eh', I says 'ee', O says 'oh', U says 'oo'. Let's practice making those sounds!"
- Words can have one or more vowels: "Some words have one vowel, like 'cat'. Others have more, like 'rainbow'. Let's find the vowels in different words!"
- Practice makes perfect: "The more we practice with vowels, the better we get at reading and writing words. Let's keep practicing together!"
