Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kelsey will be able to identify and understand diagraphs in words.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: paper, colored pencils or crayons

Prep: None

Activities

  • Draw pictures of words with diagraphs and color them in. For example, draw a ship and color it blue to represent the "sh" diagraph.

  • Go on a diagraph scavenger hunt around the house. Find objects that start or end with diagraphs like "ch" or "th".

  • Practice writing diagraphs on paper. Write "ch", "sh", "th" and other diagraphs multiple times.

Talking Points

  • "Diagraphs are when two letters make one sound. Like 'sh' in 'ship'."

  • "Can you say 'ch' like in 'chair'?"

  • "Let's find things that start with 'th', like 'thumb'."

  • "When we color the ship blue, we remember the 'sh' sound."
