Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kelsey will be able to understand and use a ten frame to represent numbers up to 10.

Materials and Prep

  • Ten frame template (drawn on paper or printed)
  • Counters (can be small toys, buttons, or any small objects)
  • No prior knowledge needed

Activities

  • Activity 1: Introduction to Ten Frame

Show Kelsey the ten frame template. Explain that each box can hold one counter. Let Kelsey place counters in the ten frame while counting aloud.

  • Activity 2: Number Recognition

Call out a number between 1 and 10. Ask Kelsey to place the correct number of counters on the ten frame. For example, if you say "3", Kelsey should place 3 counters on the ten frame.

  • Activity 3: Addition with Ten Frame

Give Kelsey two numbers (e.g., 2 and 3) and ask them to place the first number of counters on the ten frame, then add the second number of counters. Count the total number of counters together.

Talking Points

  • "A ten frame is like a special picture that helps us see numbers."
  • "Each box in the ten frame can hold one toy or one counter."
  • "When I say a number, you can show me that number by putting that many toys on the ten frame."
  • "Let's play a game where we add numbers together using the ten frame. It's like a puzzle!"
