Objective

By the end of this lesson, Kelsey will be able to identify and use basic punctuation marks.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: paper, markers, stickers, and a pencil.

No prior knowledge needed.

Activities

  • Draw a big smiley face on a piece of paper. Ask Kelsey to add a period at the end of the sentence to make it a complete thought.

  • Give Kelsey a sentence written without any punctuation. Let her use stickers as punctuation marks to match the correct punctuation to the sentence.

  • Play a game where Kelsey gets to shout out the punctuation mark needed at the end of each of your sentences.

Talking Points

  • "Punctuation marks are like little helpers that tell us how to read and understand sentences."

  • "A period looks like a tiny dot and it goes at the end of a sentence."

  • "Commas help us take a little pause in our sentences, like taking a breath."

  • "Question marks look like a little hook and they are used when we ask a question."

  • "Exclamation marks are like a surprise! They show strong feelings like excitement or surprise!"
