Objective

By the end of this lesson, KAUATOA will be able to understand and work with numbers in the tens, ones, hundreds, and thousands places.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Calculator (optional)

No prior knowledge needed, just come ready to learn!

Activities

  • Place Value Blocks: Use paper to create place value blocks for tens, ones, hundreds, and thousands. Practice building numbers and understanding their value.
  • Number Scavenger Hunt: Look around your house and find objects in quantities of tens, ones, hundreds, and thousands. Write down the numbers and discuss their place value.
  • Number Patterns: Create number patterns by adding and subtracting tens, ones, hundreds, and thousands. See if you can identify the pattern and continue it.

Talking Points

  • Tens, Ones, Hundreds, Thousands: "In the number 5,678, the 5 is in the thousands place, the 6 is in the hundreds place, the 7 is in the tens place, and the 8 is in the ones place."
  • Place Value: "Each digit in a number has a place value. It tells us how much that digit is worth based on its position in the number."
  • Building Numbers: "When we put digits together in different places, we can build different numbers. For example, 3 hundreds + 4 tens + 5 ones = 345."
  • Number Patterns: "Patterns help us predict what comes next. If we add 10 to a number each time, we are increasing by tens. What would be the next number after 25, 35, 45...?"
