Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will understand how daily and seasonal changes in the environment affect humans and other living things. You will also be able to explain regular events in the solar system and geological events on the Earth’s surface.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed: notebook, pencil, colored pencils, ruler, globe or map of the world, flashlight, small toy representing the sun, small toy representing the moon.
Prep: Find a clear space for activities and ensure all materials are ready.
Activities
1. Daily Shadow Observation: Using a flashlight and a toy representing the sun, observe how the position of the sun affects the length and direction of your shadow throughout the day.
2. Seasonal Changes Drawing: Use the globe or map to understand how the tilt of the Earth causes different seasons. Draw and color how trees and animals might look in each season.
3. Solar System Dance: Assign each family member a planet and have a dance-off where each person moves like their planet in orbit around the sun.
Talking Points
- The sun is like a giant flashlight in the sky that helps us see during the day. It also makes shadows change size and direction as it moves across the sky. You can say, "The sun is our big flashlight in the sky, and it makes our shadows dance throughout the day!"
- Do you know why we have different seasons like summer, fall, winter, and spring? It's because the Earth is tilted as it moves around the sun. This tilt makes some parts of the Earth get more sunlight, creating warmer seasons. You can say, "The Earth likes to lean back and forth as it travels around the sun, giving us seasons to enjoy!"
- Imagine if you could dance like a planet! Each planet moves in a special way around the sun. Mercury is quick, while Jupiter is slow and graceful. Let's have a dance-off to see who can move like their planet best. You can say, "Let's boogie like the planets in our solar system and have a stellar dance party!"
