Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of space and planets through hands-on science activities using Barbie dolls.

Materials and Prep

  • Barbie dolls
  • Construction paper
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue
  • Space-themed stickers or cutouts (optional)
  • Access to books or online resources about space and planets

No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Create a Space Scene: Use construction paper, markers, and any other art supplies you have to create a space scene. Draw planets, stars, and other space elements. You can also use space-themed stickers or cutouts to add more details.
  2. Barbie Space Exploration: Imagine that Barbie is an astronaut exploring different planets in the solar system. Use your space scene as a backdrop and create a story or play with your Barbie dolls. Think about the different characteristics of each planet and how Barbie would interact with them.
  3. Research and Learn: Use books or online resources to research more about the planets in our solar system. Find out interesting facts about each planet and share them with your family or friends.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Did you know that there are eight planets in our solar system?"
  • "The closest planet to the Sun is Mercury. It is very hot there because it is closest to the Sun's heat."
  • "Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is known as Earth's 'sister planet' because it is similar in size, but it has a very thick atmosphere."
  • "Earth is our home planet. It is the only planet in our solar system known to have life. It has land, water, and an atmosphere that supports living things like plants, animals, and humans."
  • "Mars is often called the 'Red Planet' because of its reddish color. Scientists have sent rovers to Mars to explore its surface."
  • "Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. It is a gas giant with a big red spot, which is actually a huge storm."
  • "Saturn is known for its beautiful rings made of ice and rock. It is the second-largest planet in our solar system."
  • "Uranus is an ice giant. It is tilted on its side, so it looks like it is rolling around the Sun."
  • "Neptune is the farthest planet from the Sun. It is also an ice giant and has strong winds and storms."
