Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will learn the basic principles of how drones work and have fun experimenting with a mini paper drone.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Markers or crayons
  • Open space for flying the paper drone

No prior knowledge is needed, just come with your curiosity and creativity!

Activities

  • Create Your Own Paper Drone: Cut out a simple drone shape from the construction paper, decorate it, and then fold the wings to make it fly.
  • Flight Test: Go outside and fly your paper drone. Observe how it moves and experiment with different wing designs to see how they affect flight.
  • Obstacle Course Challenge: Set up a simple obstacle course with household items and navigate your paper drone through it.

Talking Points

  • What is a drone?
"A drone is like a little flying robot that can go up in the sky and take pictures or deliver things."

  • Can drones be different sizes and shapes?
"Yes, some drones are big like airplanes and some are small like our paper drone. They can come in all shapes and colors!"
  • What did you learn about drones today?
"Today we learned that drones can fly with wings and propellers, and we made our own paper drone to see how it works!"
