Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create and recognize halves, quarters, and eighths as part measures of a whole length.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Paper, pencil, ruler
Prep: None required
Activities
Create a Line: Draw a line on a piece of paper and cut it into halves, quarters, and eighths. Label each part.
Measure and Cut: Measure a longer line and cut it into halves, quarters, and eighths. Compare the lengths of the parts.
Guessing Game: Draw different lines and ask your student to guess if it's divided into halves, quarters, or eighths. Let them divide it to check.
Talking Points
- Quotation: "Imagine a pizza cut into two equal parts. Each part is a half. Can you draw a line that represents a half?"
- Quotation: "Now, let's divide the line into four equal parts. Each part is a quarter. How many quarters make up the whole line?"
- Quotation: "Lastly, let's divide the line into eight equal parts. Each part is an eighth. Can you show me how to cut the line into eighths?"
- Quotation: "Great job! You can recognize halves, quarters, and eighths. Can you think of everyday objects that can be divided into these parts?"
