Objective
By the end of this lesson, Shawn will be able to test predictions, gather data, and learn about the solar system through fun activities.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed: paper, pencil, ruler, colored pencils, and access to a window or outdoor space with clear visibility of the sky.
No prior knowledge required, just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm!
Activities
- Predict and Observe: Look out of the window and predict the weather for the day. Keep a journal to record your predictions and observations.
- Solar System Model: Create a model of the solar system using paper and colored pencils. Label each planet and discuss their unique features.
- Shadow Science: Measure the length of your shadow at different times of the day. Record your data and analyze how it changes.
Talking Points
- Observation is key: "Science is all about observing the world around us. What do you see outside your window right now?"
- Predictions are like guesses: "When we make predictions, we are making educated guesses based on what we know. What do you think the weather will be like tomorrow?"
- Solar System exploration: "The solar system is made up of the sun, planets, and other celestial bodies. Let's create our own mini solar system!"
- Data helps us learn: "By recording our observations and measurements, we can learn more about the patterns and changes in nature. What did you learn from measuring your shadow?"
