Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and create your own map legend!

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: paper, crayons, markers

No prior knowledge needed, just be ready to have fun learning about maps!

Activities

  • Create Your Own Treasure Map: Draw a map of your house or backyard and include a legend with symbols for different items like trees, toys, or your favorite spot.

  • Colorful Legend: Use different colors to represent different things on your map. For example, use green for trees, blue for water, and red for your treasure!

  • Map Scavenger Hunt: Create a simple map with a legend and hide some treasures around your home for a fun scavenger hunt!

Talking Points

  • "A map legend is like a special code that helps us understand what different symbols on a map mean."

  • "Just like how we use colors to show different things in a coloring book, we can use symbols and colors on a map to show different places or objects."

  • "Imagine if you were a pirate and had a treasure map. The 'X' on the map would be in the legend to show where the hidden treasure is buried!"
