Objective
By the end of this lesson, Tristan will learn the basics of gardening for beginners and understand the importance of taking care of plants.
Materials and Prep
- Small gardening tools (shovel, rake, watering can)
- Potting soil
- Seeds (e.g., sunflower, basil, or marigold)
- Paper cups or small pots for planting
- Water
- Outdoor space or sunny windowsill
- Apron or old clothes to wear
No prior knowledge needed, just a willingness to get hands dirty!
Activities
- Seed Planting: Help Tristan plant seeds in the pots using the potting soil. Explain the importance of soil, water, and sunlight for plants to grow.
- Watering Routine: Teach Tristan how to water the newly planted seeds and discuss why plants need water to survive.
- Weeding Game: Create a fun game where Tristan can identify and "weed out" unwanted plants from the garden area. Explain why weeds can harm the plants.
- Sunlight Experiment: Place one plant in a sunny spot and another in a shaded area. Observe and discuss how sunlight affects plant growth.
Talking Points
- Plants Need Care: "Plants are like our friends, they need our care to grow big and strong."
- Watering Plants: "Plants drink water through their roots, just like we drink water to stay healthy."
- Healthy Soil: "Plants grow best in soil that is rich and full of nutrients, like how we need good food to be healthy."
- Sunlight is Important: "Plants use sunlight to make their food, just like how we need sunlight for energy."
- Be a Plant Detective: "Let's look closely at plants to see if they are happy and healthy, just like how we check on our pets."
