Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the relationship between weather and geography, and how different geographical factors influence weather patterns.

Materials and Prep

  • Internet access for research
  • Pen and paper for note-taking
  • World map or globe

Activities

  1. Research and Present: Choose a specific geographical region or country that you find interesting. Research the typical weather patterns and climate of that area. Create a presentation to share your findings, including information on the factors that influence the weather in that region.

  2. Weather Map Analysis: Use an online weather map or a printed weather map from a newspaper. Analyze the map and identify different weather patterns in different regions. Discuss how geography plays a role in creating these weather patterns.

  3. Weather Journal: Keep a weather journal for one week, noting the weather conditions each day. Include observations about how geography might be affecting the weather in your area. At the end of the week, reflect on the patterns you noticed and discuss them with your teacher or a family member.

Ninth Grade Talking Points

  • "Weather is influenced by various geographical factors, such as latitude, altitude, proximity to bodies of water, and prevailing winds."
  • "Latitude affects weather because regions closer to the equator receive more direct sunlight, resulting in warmer temperatures."
  • "Altitude influences weather because higher elevations generally have cooler temperatures due to the decrease in air pressure and the presence of colder air masses."
  • "Proximity to bodies of water can moderate temperatures, as water has a higher heat capacity than land. Coastal areas often experience milder and more stable weather conditions."
  • "Prevailing winds, such as the trade winds and westerlies, can carry moisture and affect weather patterns in different regions."
