Materials and Prep

  • Various Spring produce (fruits and vegetables)
  • Cutting board and knife (with adult supervision)
  • Pen and paper for notes
  • Internet access for research

No prior knowledge is needed, just a curious mind ready to learn!

Activities

  • Spring Produce Taste Test: Explore different Spring fruits and vegetables. Note the flavors and textures. Which ones do you like the most?
  • Seed Observation: Choose a fruit or vegetable and carefully extract the seeds. Observe and document the size, shape, and color of the seeds. Can you identify what plant they belong to?
  • Grow Your Own: Select a seed from a fruit or vegetable that you enjoyed. Plant it in a small pot with soil and water it regularly. Watch it grow and document its progress.

Talking Points

  • Plants and Seasons: "Plants need specific conditions to grow well. Spring is a great time for many plants to thrive because of the warmer weather and longer days."
  • Seed Germination: "Seeds contain all the necessary nutrients for a plant to start growing. When planted in soil and given water, the seed will germinate, sending out roots and shoots."
  • Importance of Eating Seasonally: "Eating fruits and vegetables that are in season not only tastes better but also supports local farmers and reduces the environmental impact of food transportation."
  • Nutrients in Produce: "Different colors of fruits and vegetables indicate the presence of various nutrients. Eating a variety of colors ensures you get a range of vitamins and minerals."
