Teen Titans Go! Spelling Power! - Lesson Plan

Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard or large paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Letter tiles or magnetic letters (optional)
  • Small pieces of paper
  • List of target spelling words: team, go, run, jump, fly, boom, zap, fun, good, bad

Lesson Procedure:

1. Introduction: Titan Talk! (5 minutes)

Start with excitement! "Guess what? Today, we're going to use SUPERHERO power to help us learn spelling, Teen Titans Go! style! Who's your favorite Titan? What's their coolest power?" Briefly discuss the characters (Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Cyborg, Raven). Explain that even superheroes need to know how to spell words like 'GO!' or 'TEAM!' or 'BOOM!'

2. Word Introduction: Power Words! (10 minutes)

Introduce the spelling words one by one. Write each word clearly on the board/paper.

  • Say the word clearly (e.g., "team").
  • Use it in a simple TTG-themed sentence (e.g., "The team works together." "Robin tells them to go!" "Beast Boy likes to run." "Starfire can fly." "Cyborg says BOOM!" "Raven thinks that is not fun." "Is Beast Boy good or bad when he plays tricks?").
  • Sound out the word together, emphasizing each sound (e.g., /t/ /ee/ /m/ = team; /g/ /oe/ = go; /r/ /u/ /n/ = run). Use arm-tapping or finger-spelling for sounds if helpful.

3. Activity 1: Character Spelling Match (10 minutes)

"Let's help the Titans spell!" Assign a word (or two) to each Titan. You can draw a very simple symbol for each (e.g., bird for Robin, star for Starfire, green blob for Beast Boy, robot eye for Cyborg, dark cloud for Raven) or just use their names.

  • "Let's spell Robin's word: T-E-A-M." Write it together under Robin's symbol/name.
  • "Let's spell Cyborg's word: B-O-O-M." Write it together.
  • Continue for other characters/words (e.g., Starfire: FLY, Beast Boy: RUN, Raven: BAD, Everyone: FUN, GO).

4. Activity 2: Titan Action Spelling (10 minutes)

"Time to move like the Titans and spell!" Get ready to do an action while spelling each word aloud.

  • JUMP: Jump up and down while chanting J-U-M-P!
  • FLY: Wave arms like flying while chanting F-L-Y!
  • RUN: Run in place while chanting R-U-N!
  • ZAP: Point fingers and make zap noises while chanting Z-A-P!
  • BOOM: Clap hands loudly for the 'boom' sound while chanting B-O-O-M!
  • GO: March forward while chanting G-O!
Repeat a few times to reinforce the spelling through movement.

5. Activity 3: Word Scramble Power-Up (10 minutes)

Use letter tiles or write letters on small pieces of paper.

  • Choose one spelling word (e.g., 'team'). Mix up its letters (e.g., 'm', 'a', 't', 'e').
  • Challenge the student: "Oh no! The letters got mixed up! Can you use your spelling power to put them back in order to spell 'team'?"
  • Provide support with sounds if needed. Repeat with 2-3 other words (e.g., 'run', 'fun', 'zap').

6. Activity 4: Superhero Sentences (5-10 minutes)

"Let's write like a hero!" Help the student write one or two simple sentences using the spelling words. Provide sentence starters if needed.

  • Example Starter: "The team can ____." (run, jump, fly)
  • Example Starter: "It is ____ to ____." (fun to run, fun to jump)
  • Example Sentence: "Go team go!"
  • Example Sentence: "Zap! Boom! Run!"
Focus on correct spelling of the target words and legible handwriting.

7. Wrap-up: Mission Complete! (5 minutes)

Quickly review the spelling words covered. "Wow, you used amazing spelling power today! Which word was the most fun to spell? Which Titan helped us spell which word?" Praise the student's effort and success. Maybe end with a Teen Titans Go! cheer!

Differentiation/Extension:

  • Support: Focus on fewer words (3-5). Provide more explicit sound-by-sound guidance. Have the student trace the words first.
  • Challenge: Introduce slightly harder words related to the theme (e.g., 'power', 'fight', 'laugh', 'pizza'). Ask the student to create more complex sentences or a very short story using multiple words.
