Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a basic understanding of solar eclipses and their significance.

Materials and Prep

  • Flashlight
  • Small ball (representing the moon)
  • Round object (representing the Earth)
  • Dark room

No prior knowledge needed.

Activities

  • Create a mini solar eclipse: In a dark room, use the flashlight as the sun, the ball as the moon, and the round object as the Earth. Show how the moon can block the sunlight from reaching the Earth.
  • Draw and color a solar eclipse: Provide the student with paper and coloring materials to draw their version of a solar eclipse.
  • Sing a song about the solar system: Introduce a fun song about the planets and the sun to engage the student in learning about space.
