Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to measure out the rectangular pool area and perimeter using a trundle wheel and measuring tape.
Materials and Prep
Materials: trundle wheel, measuring tape
Prep: Familiarize yourself with how to use a trundle wheel and measuring tape.
Activities
1. Measure the length and width of the rectangular pool area using the measuring tape.
2. Use the trundle wheel to measure the perimeter of the pool area by walking around the edges.
3. Calculate the total area of the pool by multiplying the length and width measurements.
4. Compare the calculated area with the actual area of the pool.
Talking Points
- When measuring the length and width, make sure the measuring tape is straight and taut. Remember, accuracy is key!
- Say: "To find the perimeter, add up all the sides of the pool. It's like walking around the pool to see how much fence you would need."
- Use the trundle wheel by placing it at the starting point and walking along the edges. Say: "Each time the wheel makes a full rotation, it measures a specific distance."
- After measuring the perimeter, say: "The perimeter is the total distance around the pool. It's important for knowing how much material you need for fencing or paving."
- When calculating the area, multiply the length by the width. Say: "Area is like the space inside the pool. It's useful for knowing how much paint or grass seed you might need."
- Encourage the student to compare the calculated area with the actual area to check their accuracy. Say: "It's important to double-check your calculations to make sure everything adds up correctly."
