Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will observe and understand the science behind watching Skittles melt in water.

Materials and Prep

Materials:

  • Skittles (variety of colors)
  • Clear glass or plastic plate
  • Water

Prep:

  • Set up a clean workspace.
  • Fill a small cup with room temperature water.

Activities

1. Arrange Skittles in a pattern around the edge of the plate.

2. Carefully pour water onto the plate, just enough to cover the bottom.

3. Observe and record what happens as the Skittles start to dissolve and create colorful patterns.

Talking Points

  • Skittles are made of sugar and food coloring. When placed in water, the colored coating dissolves and spreads out.
  • Watch how the colors from the Skittles mix with the water and create new colors!
  • Water molecules are attracted to the sugar molecules in the Skittles, causing them to break down and mix together.
  • See how the water changes color as the sugar dissolves!
  • This activity demonstrates how substances can change form when exposed to different environments.
  • Isn't it fascinating how something as simple as water can create such a colorful reaction with Skittles?
