Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the processes involved in volcanic and earthquake activity, folding, and faulting.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: paper, colored pencils, ruler, internet access for research.

Prep: Familiarize yourself with the terms related to volcanic and earthquake activity, folding, and faulting.

Activities

  • Create a Volcano Model: Use paper and colored pencils to create a cross-section model of a volcano. Label the different parts and explain how volcanic activity occurs.

  • Earthquake Simulation: Research how earthquakes occur and simulate one using a ruler and paper. Explain the concept of tectonic plates and their movement.

  • Fold and Fault Experiment: Fold a piece of paper to demonstrate folding and create a fault line. Describe how these geological processes shape the Earth's surface.

Talking Points

  • "Volcanoes are like nature's pressure relief valves. When magma rises to the surface, it can erupt explosively or flow out slowly."

  • "Earthquakes are caused by the movement of tectonic plates. When these plates rub against each other, they release energy in the form of seismic waves."

  • "Folding and faulting are processes that occur due to the immense pressure within the Earth's crust. Over time, these processes shape the landforms we see today."
