Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will learn about Down syndrome and understand that everyone is unique and special in their own way.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Coloring pencils or markers
  • Internet access for research (with parent supervision)
  • Open mind and curiosity!

No prior knowledge required, just come with an open heart and willingness to learn!

Activities

  • Research Time: Look up information about Down syndrome online or in books. Take notes on interesting facts.
  • Draw a Portrait: Draw a picture of yourself or a friend, and then draw a picture of someone with Down syndrome. Notice the similarities and differences.
  • Role Play: Pretend to be a teacher explaining to your toys or pets what Down syndrome is and why it's important to be kind to everyone.

  • Everyone is Unique: "Just like how we all have different favorite colors, people with Down syndrome have their own special abilities and talents."
  • Extra Chromosome: "People with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome, which makes them unique. It's like having an extra puzzle piece that makes a beautiful picture."
