Materials and Prep

  • Minecraft Bedrock Edition
  • Computer or gaming device
  • Pencil and paper
  • Access to online resources or books about the American Revolutionary War

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of how to play Minecraft Bedrock and have access to relevant resources about the American Revolutionary War.

Activities

  1. Begin by discussing the American Revolutionary War and its importance in history. Talk about key events, such as the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Lexington and Concord, and the Declaration of Independence.
  2. Next, launch Minecraft Bedrock and create a new world. Encourage the student to build a colonial-inspired village or fort, using materials available in the game.
  3. While exploring the virtual world, prompt the student to imagine themselves as a colonist during the American Revolutionary War. Encourage them to think about the challenges they would face and the decisions they would make.
  4. After spending some time in the virtual world, have the student reflect on their experience. Ask them to write a short paragraph describing how their Minecraft Bedrock creation relates to the American Revolutionary War.
  5. Finally, have a discussion with the student about their reflection. Ask them questions about the choices they made in the game and how they connect to the historical events of the American Revolutionary War.
