Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice math skills while learning interesting facts about reptiles.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

Activities

  • Reptile Math Facts: Research interesting facts about different reptiles and create math problems based on their characteristics. For example, if a snake lays 15 eggs and 7 of them hatch, how many eggs did not hatch?
  • Measuring Reptiles: Choose a few reptiles and measure their lengths in inches or centimeters. Practice converting these measurements between the two units and calculate the average length of the reptiles.
  • Reptile Habitat Area: Draw different habitats for reptiles and calculate the area of each habitat. You can use the measurements you took for the reptiles in the previous activity to help with this.

Talking Points

  • Reptile Math Facts: "Let's combine our love for reptiles with math! Did you know that reptiles have some amazing characteristics that can be turned into fun math problems?"
  • Measuring Reptiles: "Now, let's measure the lengths of some reptiles and practice converting those measurements. We can also find the average length of our reptile friends!"
  • Reptile Habitat Area: "Reptiles live in various habitats. Let's draw and calculate the area of these habitats. This will help us understand the space they need to thrive!"
