Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic components of a keyboard and how they work together.
Materials and Prep
- Keyboard (can be an old one not in use)
- Flathead screwdriver
- Small container for screws
- Patience and curiosity!
No prior knowledge is required, just an interest in learning how things work.
Activities
- Activity 1: Exploring the Keyboard
Start by examining the different parts of the keyboard - keys, space bar, shift key, etc. Take note of any patterns or interesting features. - Activity 2: Taking Apart the Keyboard
Using the flathead screwdriver, carefully remove the screws on the back of the keyboard. Keep the screws in the small container to avoid losing them. - Activity 3: Discovering the Inside
Once the screws are removed, gently separate the top and bottom parts of the keyboard. Explore the inside components such as the circuit board, rubber domes, and key switches. - Activity 4: Putting it Back Together
After exploring the inside, try putting the keyboard back together. Make sure to align the parts correctly and secure the screws back in place.
Talking Points
- Keyboards have many small parts that work together:
"Keyboards are like puzzles with buttons that help us type." - Circuit boards help keys communicate with the computer:
"The circuit board is like a messenger that sends our key presses to the computer." - Rubber domes provide the springy feeling when typing:
"Rubber domes give our keys bounce, like jumping on a trampoline." - Each key has its own switch mechanism:
"Imagine each key has its own secret door that opens when we press it."
