Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and apply various English grammar concepts while analyzing a novel.

Materials and Prep

  • A novel of your choice
  • Pen or pencil
  • Highlighters or colored pencils
  • Notebook or loose-leaf paper

Prior knowledge of basic English grammar concepts such as parts of speech, sentence structure, and punctuation is helpful but not required.

Activities

  1. Choose a novel that you would like to study. It can be a book you have already read or a new one you are interested in.
  2. Read the first chapter of the novel and make notes on any interesting sentences or phrases that catch your attention.
  3. Identify and highlight different parts of speech in the sentences you selected. Pay attention to nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns.
  4. Analyze the sentence structure of the sentences you highlighted. Look for different types of sentences such as simple, compound, and complex sentences.
  5. Take note of any punctuation marks used in the sentences and think about how they contribute to the overall meaning and tone of the text.
  6. Write a short paragraph discussing your findings. Explain how the author's use of grammar enhances the storytelling and impacts your understanding of the novel.
