By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify different bugs and learn some fun facts about them!

Materials and Prep

  • Magnifying glass
  • Empty jar with holes in the lid
  • Paper and crayons
  • Outdoor space to explore

No prior knowledge required, just bring your curiosity!

Activities

  • Go on a bug hunt in your yard or local park. Use the magnifying glass to get a closer look at the bugs you find.
  • See if you can spot any ants, ladybugs, or butterflies!

  • Catch a bug in the jar (gently!) and observe it for a few minutes before letting it go.
  • What colors do you see on the bug? How many legs does it have?

  • Create bug rubbings by placing paper over different textured surfaces outside and rubbing crayons on top.
  • What patterns do you see? Can you guess which bug made each pattern?

Talking Points

  • Bugs are tiny creatures that live all around us.
  • "Look at that tiny ant carrying a big leaf! Bugs are strong too."

  • Bugs have different colors and shapes.
  • "See the red ladybug with black spots? Isn't it pretty?"

  • Bugs help our environment by pollinating plants and breaking down dead matter.
  • "Bugs are like nature's little helpers, they have important jobs to do."
