Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore and understand the Math and Science concepts found in Presque Isle State Park.
Materials and Prep
- Pen and paper
- Calculator (optional)
- Access to the internet for research
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for learning!
No prior knowledge is necessary, just be ready to have fun and learn!
Activities
- Nature Math Hunt: Go on a nature walk in Presque Isle State Park and count how many different types of birds, trees, and flowers you see. Make a tally chart to record your findings.
- Science Scavenger Hunt: Create a list of items you might find in the park (e.g., rocks, leaves, insects) and try to find them. Observe their characteristics and write down what you discover.
- Math in Nature: Measure the height of a tree using a ruler or tape measure. Estimate the height first, then measure it. Calculate the difference between your estimate and the actual height.
- Science Experiment: Collect water samples from different areas of the park (lake, stream, puddle) and observe them under a microscope if available. Describe what you see and compare the samples.
Talking Points
- Observation is key: "Look closely at the world around you. What do you notice? Nature has so much to teach us if we pay attention."
- Numbers in nature: "Did you know that Math is everywhere, even in the park? Let's count the petals on a flower or the branches on a tree!"
- Curiosity leads to discovery: "Asking questions and exploring can help us learn new things. What do you wonder about in Presque Isle State Park?"
- Every living thing is unique: "Just like how each person is different, every plant and animal in the park has its own special features. Let's find out more about them!"
- Learning through play: "Learning doesn't always have to happen at a desk. We can have fun and discover new things while playing and exploring in the park."
