Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will learn about basic medical tools and their uses through fun activities related to playing doctor.
Materials and Prep
- Stuffed animals or dolls
- Toy medical kit or improvised items like band-aids, cotton balls, and a toy stethoscope
- Storybook about visiting the doctor
- Clear space for playing
No special preparation needed, just have the materials ready and a positive attitude!
Activities
- Role-play doctor and patient with stuffed animals or dolls. Use the toy medical kit to check their "health".
- Read a storybook about a visit to the doctor. Discuss the different things doctors do to help us stay healthy.
- Create a doctor's office dramatic play area. Use blankets as privacy curtains and have a waiting area with chairs.
Encourage the student to use the stethoscope to listen to the heartbeat of the toys and use band-aids to "fix" any pretend injuries.
Ask the student questions about the story and relate it to their own experiences when visiting the doctor.
Encourage the student to take turns being the doctor and the patient, fostering empathy and understanding of the roles.
Talking Points
- Doctors help us feel better when we are sick. They use special tools to check our bodies.
- When we visit the doctor, they listen to our heartbeat with a stethoscope and look in our ears and mouth.
- It's important to tell the doctor how we feel so they can help us get better.
"Doctors are like superheroes who help us feel better. Let's pretend to be doctors and use our tools to help our toys!"
"Doctors are very gentle when they check us. Let's listen to our toys' hearts and make sure they are healthy too!"
"Doctors want to know how we feel so they can help us. Let's practice telling our toys if they have an 'ouchie'."
