Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to analyze the structure and meaning of poems, specifically focusing on rhyme scheme, meter, and symbolism.
Materials and Prep
- Poems for analysis (can be found online or in poetry books)
- Pen and paper
- Basic understanding of poetry terms (rhyme scheme, meter, symbolism)
Activities
Choose a poem that interests you and identify its rhyme scheme. Write down the rhyme pattern (ABAB, AABB, etc.) and discuss how it contributes to the overall meaning of the poem.
Read a poem out loud and pay attention to its meter. Try to tap out the stressed and unstressed syllables to determine the poem's rhythm. Discuss how the meter affects the tone of the poem.
Look for symbolism in a poem. Identify any objects, colors, or actions that may have deeper meanings. Discuss how these symbols enhance the theme of the poem.
