Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will understand the importance of taking care of the Earth and be able to identify ways in which you can help protect the environment, just like the Lorax.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Colored pencils or markers
- Access to outdoor space (if available)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson, just bring your creativity and curiosity!
Activities
- Create a "Help the Earth" poster: Draw a picture of yourself as a Lorax-like character and write down ways in which you can help the Earth, just like the Lorax did.
- Go on a nature walk: Take a walk outside and observe the environment around you. Think about how you can protect and preserve the plants and animals you see.
- Plant a seed: Find a small plant seed (like a sunflower or bean) and plant it in a pot. Take care of it and watch it grow, just like the Lorax cared for the Truffula trees.
Talking Points
- Quotation: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." - Dr. Seuss
- Explain to the student that the Lorax is a character created by Dr. Seuss who speaks for the trees and the environment. Discuss the importance of speaking up for the Earth.
- Quotation: "I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees." - The Lorax by Dr. Seuss
- Ask the student to think about what they can do to help protect the environment in their daily lives, just like the Lorax protected the Truffula trees.
