Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to confidently fix a puncture on a bicycle tire.

Materials and Prep

  • Bicycle with a flat tire
  • Patch kit (includes patches, glue, and sandpaper)
  • Tire levers
  • Pump
  • Bucket of water
  • Old rag

No prior knowledge is required, just come with a positive attitude and willingness to learn!

Activities

  • Activity 1: Learn about the parts of the tire
Start by examining the different parts of the tire such as the inner tube, tire bead, and valve.
  • Activity 2: Practice removing the tire
Use the tire levers to carefully remove the tire from the wheel. Be patient and gentle to avoid damaging the tire or tube.
  • Activity 3: Locate the puncture
Submerge the inflated tube in a bucket of water to find where the air bubbles are coming from.
  • Activity 4: Patch the puncture
Follow the instructions on the patch kit to apply a patch to the punctured area. Make sure to let the glue dry before reassembling the tire.
  • Activity 5: Reassemble and inflate the tire
Carefully put the tire back on the wheel, making sure the bead is properly seated. Use the pump to inflate the tire to the recommended pressure.

Talking Points

  • Understanding the puncture: "A puncture is a small hole in the tire that causes the air to leak out."
  • Using the patch kit: "The patch kit contains everything we need to fix the puncture - patches, glue, and sandpaper. We need to follow the instructions carefully."
  • Importance of finding the puncture: "Submerging the tube in water helps us find where the air is escaping from. This is crucial to fixing the puncture."
  • Reassembling the tire: "When putting the tire back on the wheel, make sure the bead is properly seated all around. This ensures a secure fit."
  • Inflating the tire: "Use the pump to inflate the tire to the recommended pressure. This will ensure a smooth and safe ride."
