Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply geometric concepts and principles to solve problems related to Star Wars.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Designing a Star Wars Spaceship

Ask the student to design their own Star Wars spaceship using geometric shapes. They can use circles, rectangles, triangles, and any other shapes they desire. Encourage them to think about the dimensions, angles, and symmetry of their design.

  2. Activity 2: Calculating the Surface Area of a Death Star

Provide the student with the dimensions of the Death Star and ask them to calculate its surface area. Guide them through the process, explaining how to break down the complex shape into simpler geometric shapes and use the appropriate formulas to find the surface area.

  3. Activity 3: Analyzing Starfighter Trajectories

Show the student a clip from a Star Wars movie featuring starfighters engaged in a dogfight. Ask them to analyze the trajectories of the starfighters and identify any geometric patterns or principles at play. Discuss concepts such as angles of attack, intercept courses, and relative positions.

Eleventh Grade Talking Points

  • "Geometry is not just about shapes and figures; it has practical applications in various fields, including space engineering."
  • "Designing a Star Wars spaceship requires considering the dimensions, angles, and symmetry of the geometric shapes used."
  • "Calculating the surface area of complex objects like the Death Star involves breaking them down into simpler geometric shapes and applying the appropriate formulas."
  • "Analyzing starfighter trajectories involves understanding geometric principles such as angles of attack, intercept courses, and relative positions."
  • "Geometry plays a crucial role in the visual effects of Star Wars movies, as it helps create realistic and visually appealing space battles."
