Objective
By the end of this lesson, Jyemeka will be able to identify nocturnal animals, observe changes in the night sky, and understand the phases of the moon during nighttime walks.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Flashlight, notebook, pen, comfortable walking shoes
Prep: Choose a safe route for the night walk, check the weather forecast, and ensure the flashlight is working.
Activities
-
Animal Spotting: Take a night walk in a nearby park or backyard with a flashlight. Look for nocturnal animals like owls, bats, or raccoons. Record the animals you see in your notebook.
-
Moon Phases Observation: Observe the moon and discuss its different phases. Draw the moon shape you see each night in your notebook and write down the date.
-
Stargazing: Find a clear spot away from city lights and look up at the night sky. Try to identify different constellations and discuss how the sky changes throughout the night.
Talking Points
- "Nocturnal animals are creatures that are active at night. They have special adaptations to help them see in the dark, like big eyes or keen senses."
- "The moon goes through different phases, like a cycle. We see different shapes of the moon at different times of the month, from a full moon to a new moon."
- "Stargazing can be fun! Constellations are groups of stars that form patterns in the sky. Try to find the Big Dipper or Orion's Belt."
