Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve problems in a Minecraft-themed activity.
Materials and Prep
- Minecraft game
- Pencil and paper
- Calculator (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity: Mining for Resources
In this activity, you will pretend to be a Minecraft character mining for resources. Use your arithmetic skills to solve the following problems:
- Problem 1: If you find 6 diamonds and share them equally among 3 friends, how many diamonds will each person receive?
- Problem 2: You come across a cave with 24 iron ores. If you collect half of them, how many iron ores will you have?
- Problem 3: You need to craft 8 golden apples, and each apple requires 4 gold ingots. How many gold ingots do you need in total?
-
Activity: Building Structures
In this activity, you will use your arithmetic skills to plan and build structures in Minecraft:
- Problem 1: You want to build a house with 5 rooms. If each room requires 7 wooden planks, how many wooden planks do you need in total?
- Problem 2: You have 36 stone blocks and want to build a tower. If each level of the tower requires 4 stone blocks, how many levels can you build?
- Problem 3: You want to create a farm with 16 rows of crops. If each row can hold 9 crops, how many crops can you plant in total?
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations."
- "In Minecraft, we can use arithmetic to solve problems and make decisions."
- "When we mine for resources, we can use arithmetic to divide the resources equally among friends or calculate how many resources we will have after collecting a certain amount."
- "When building structures, arithmetic helps us determine how many materials we need and how many levels or rows we can create."
- "By applying arithmetic skills, we can become better problem solvers in Minecraft and in real life!"
