Materials and Prep

  • Outdoor space for activities
  • Field guide or reference book on local wildlife
  • Basic fishing gear (rod, reel, hooks, bait)
  • Materials for building a primitive shelter (sticks, leaves, vines)
  • First aid kit

No prior knowledge or experience is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Wildlife Observation: Go to an outdoor location and spend some time observing the local wildlife. Use the field guide or reference book to identify different species. Take notes on their behaviors, habitats, and any interesting adaptations you notice.
  2. Fishing Adventure: Set up your fishing gear and try your hand at catching fish. Learn about the different types of fish in your area, their habitats, and the best techniques for catching them. Practice catch-and-release to promote conservation.
  3. Primitive Shelter Building: Use the materials provided to build a basic shelter in the outdoor space. Learn about different types of shelters used by primitive cultures and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Test the durability and functionality of your shelter.
  4. Safety and First Aid: Discuss the importance of safety when engaging in outdoor activities. Review basic first aid procedures and demonstrate how to treat common injuries that may occur during hunting, fishing, camping, or shelter building.
