Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and create basic geometric shapes using Magnatiles.

Materials and Prep

  • Magnatiles set
  • A flat surface to work on

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Magnatiles

Start by showing the student the Magnatiles set and explain how the pieces can stick together using magnets.

  2. Identifying Shapes

Ask the student to identify different shapes that can be made using the Magnatiles. Encourage them to explore and experiment with the pieces to create squares, triangles, rectangles, and other geometric shapes.

  3. Creating Shapes

Challenge the student to create specific shapes using the Magnatiles. Start with simple shapes like squares and triangles, and gradually progress to more complex shapes like rectangles and hexagons.

  4. Shape Sorting

Provide the student with a variety of Magnatiles shapes and ask them to sort them into different categories based on their properties (e.g., number of sides, number of vertices).

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to learn about geometric shapes using Magnatiles."
  • "Geometric shapes are flat shapes that can be found in our everyday life. Can you think of any examples?"
  • "Magnatiles are special tiles that have magnets on their edges, allowing them to stick together easily."
  • "What shape do you see when you put two Magnatiles together? That's right, it's a square!"
  • "What about when you put three Magnatiles together? It forms a triangle!"
  • "Now, let's try to create a rectangle using Magnatiles. Can you figure out how many tiles we need?"
  • "Great job! You have created a rectangle. What other shapes can you make?"
  • "Let's sort these Magnatiles shapes based on their properties. How many sides does this shape have? How many vertices?"
  • "Remember, shapes are all around us. Keep an eye out for different shapes you see in your daily life!"
