Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to conduct fun and safe science experiments related to chemistry.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed:
- Water
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Food coloring (optional)
- Cups
- Measuring spoons
- Plastic bottles
- Markers
Before starting the lesson, make sure to have a clear workspace and adult supervision if needed.
Activities
- Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano: Create a mini volcano by mixing baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring in a plastic bottle. Watch it erupt!
- Color Changing Milk: Pour milk into a shallow dish, add drops of food coloring, then dip a cotton swab with dish soap and touch the milk to see the colors swirl!
- Invisible Ink: Use lemon juice as invisible ink. Write a message on paper, let it dry, then hold it near a heat source to reveal the hidden message.
Talking Points
- Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano: "When we mix baking soda and vinegar together, they create a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide gas. This gas builds up pressure and causes the eruption, just like a volcano!"
- Color Changing Milk: "Milk is mostly water but also contains fat and proteins. When we add soap, the molecules in the soap grab the fat in the milk and start moving it around, creating the swirling colors."
- Invisible Ink: "Lemon juice is an acid that weakens the paper fibers. When we heat the paper, the acid breaks down the fibers faster, revealing the hidden message. It's like a secret code!"
