Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Coloring materials (crayons, markers, colored pencils)
  • Reference books or internet access to explore art and historical sites

No prior knowledge needed, just bring your curiosity and creativity!

Activities

  • Create Your Own Travel Postcard: Design a postcard featuring a famous landmark from a country you would like to visit. Write a message on the back as if you were sending it to a friend.
  • Artistic Exploration: Choose an art style from a different country (like Japanese Sumi-e or Mexican Huichol art) and try to create your own artwork inspired by that style.
  • Historical Scavenger Hunt: Research a historical site (like the Pyramids of Egypt or the Great Wall of China) and draw a map with clues to find hidden treasures in your own backyard.

Talking Points

  • Art is a way for people to express their feelings and ideas. When we look at art from different countries, we can learn about their culture and history.
  • "Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." - Thomas Merton
  • Historical sites are places where important events happened long ago. They can teach us about the people who lived before us and how they lived.
  • "The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future." - Theodore Roosevelt
  • Traveling allows us to explore new places, meet different people, and learn about the world outside of our own. It can inspire us to be more creative and open-minded.
  • "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." - Saint Augustine
