Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will learn about magnets and how they work.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed:
- Several different magnets (e.g. bar magnet, horseshoe magnet)
- Various objects to test with the magnets (paper clips, coins, plastic toys)
- A piece of paper
- Crayons or markers
- A small bowl of water
Prep:
- Set up a table or flat surface for the activities
- Have the materials organized and ready to use
- Make sure the area is free of any other magnets or metal objects that could interfere with the experiments
Activities
1. Magnetic Exploration: Let's test different objects with the magnets and see which ones are attracted to them.
2. Drawing with Magnets: Place a piece of paper over a magnet and sprinkle iron filings on top to create a magnetic drawing.
3. Floating Paper Clips: Place a paper clip on water and use a magnet to make it float and move around.
Talking Points
- "Magnets are special objects that can attract certain things like metal objects."
- "When we test different objects with magnets, some will stick to the magnet while others won't."
- "We can use magnets to create cool drawings by moving iron filings around."
- "Did you know that some magnets are strong enough to make objects like paper clips float on water?"
