Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers in the ecosystem.

Materials and Prep

  • Colorful markers or pencils
  • Blank paper
  • No prior knowledge needed!

Activities

  • Draw and Label: Draw a simple food chain with a tree (producer), a rabbit (consumer), and a mushroom (decomposer). Label each part.
  • Role Play: Pretend to be a producer by standing tall like a tree, a consumer by hopping like a rabbit, and a decomposer by crawling like a worm.
  • Sorting Game: Cut out pictures of different plants and animals. Sort them into producers, consumers, and decomposers categories.

Talking Points

  • Producers: "Plants are producers because they make their food using sunlight."
  • Consumers: "Animals like rabbits are consumers because they eat plants or other animals."
  • Decomposers: "Decomposers like worms help break down dead plants and animals into nutrients for the soil."
