Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the main characters and setting in the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Materials and Prep

• Copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone chapter 1
• Paper and colored pencils for drawing
• Imagination and enthusiasm!

Activities

• Character Drawing: Draw a picture of Harry Potter and describe what you think he looks like based on the first chapter.
• Setting Description: Write a paragraph describing the cupboard under the stairs where Harry lives. Use your imagination!
• Acting Out: Pretend to be Harry and reenact a scene from the chapter with your family members.

• Harry Potter: "Harry is the main character in the story. He lives with his horrible aunt, uncle, and cousin who treat him badly."
• The Dursleys: "The Dursleys are Harry's aunt, uncle, and cousin. They make Harry live in a cupboard under the stairs."
• Privet Drive: "Privet Drive is the street where the Dursleys live. It's a very ordinary place, but strange things start to happen there."
• Hagrid and Dumbledore: "Hagrid and Dumbledore are important characters who will appear later in the story. They know a lot about Harry's past."
