Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and work with fractions like a pro!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Scissors
No special knowledge is required, just have a positive attitude and be ready to learn!
Activities
- Fraction Pizza: Draw a circle on a paper, divide it into equal slices, color some slices to represent different fractions.
- Fraction Flags: Cut out different colored paper strips, fold them into halves, thirds, fourths, etc., and create a fraction flag display.
- Fraction Race: Draw a number line, mark fractions on it, and have a race where you move forward based on the fraction you roll on a dice.
Talking Points
- What is a fraction? "A fraction is a way to represent a part of a whole. It has a top number (numerator) that tells how many parts we have and a bottom number (denominator) that tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into."
- Types of Fractions: "Fractions can be proper (when the numerator is smaller than the denominator), improper (when the numerator is bigger than the denominator), or mixed numbers (a whole number and a fraction combined)."
- Adding and Subtracting Fractions: "When adding or subtracting fractions, we need to have the same denominator. We add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator the same."
- Multiplying Fractions: "To multiply fractions, we simply multiply the numerators together to get the new numerator, and multiply the denominators together to get the new denominator."
- Dividing Fractions: "To divide fractions, we multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Flip the second fraction upside down and then multiply."
